Version 1.27 © by Michael Neuweiler 1994 - 1995

I know nobody reads this section (as I do).. but I can't help ;-)
Anyway it's short. This program is shareware - what means anyone
can use it as long as he/she doesn't gain profit out of it and
the usage has nothing to do with military or other stuff which might
endagnger other people/animals. (don't call me communist, now ! ;-)
You can use the program for free for as long as you wish but if you
want to get rid off the requester, send 10$ or similar to the address
at the bottom of this document and you'll receive a key-file.
The program is not crippled in any way. All features are available
without the key.
Introduction:
=============
mftp 1.27 is an ftp client proram for the AmiTCP protocol stack.
It has a very nice GUI which is realized with MUI (see below).
Useful features as directory caching, adjustable transfer buffer size
and a lot more... You have to try out by yourself or continue reding
this text.
Requirements:
=============
- Amiga 500 - 4000
- Memory: When AmiTCP is running, about 100kB should be enough.
- Kickstart 2.1 or better
- AmiTCP 3.0 or better (maybe 2.3 works too.. never tried it)
© 1994 by Network Solution Development Inc, Finnland
available on AmiNET or other sites.
- MUI 2.2
© 1992-94 by Stefan Stunz
available on AmiNET or other sites.
Installation:
=============
Copy the executable to a path of your choice.
If the file 'mftp.key' is included, copy it to 's:'
That's it ! Damn straightforwad, isn't it ?
You can start it from CLI or Workbench... as you wish
A yeah, to be on the save side I would use a stack size of
at least 5000.
Description:
============
When you start mftp a window should appear. (If not, try to start it
from CLI to get an error report.) This window can be divided in four
sections: left, middle, right and lower.
- On the left side you find a string Gadget that contains the current
directory on your computer. You can click on the icon to its right to
get a drive list.
Below it you'll find the directories and the files in this directory.
Double click on a directory to enter it. If you double click on a
file you start the filetransfer (only possible when connected).
- In the middle row there are a lot of gadgets:
ascii : Selects the file transfer mode ASCII or BINARY. If you
bin select 'auto' mftp will use the later descibed feature to
auto recognize automatically if ascii or binary mode should be
used.
---> : Chose active list (left/local or right/remote).
<--- The following gadgets have only affect on the side where
the arrow points away from.
parent : Go to parent directory.
refresh: Refresh the directory. If the right (remote) directory
is active mftp will clear the directorie's cache and get
it from the remote host again.
mkdir : Create a directory
rmdir : Remove selected directory
copy : Copy the selected file(s). They are copied in the direction
of the arrow (above).
rename : Rename selected file(s)
delete : Delete selected files(s). You will be prompted if you
really want to do this unless you didn't deselect
'confirm delete' in the setup menu.
view : Start 'More' or the pager you've set under 'env:PAGER' to
view the contents of a file. Files on the remote host will
be transferred automatically.
- The stuff on the right is equal the the one on the left except that
it is dedicated for the directories and files of the remote host.
Also there is no gadget for the drives.
This side will be disabled as long as you're not connected to a
remote host.
To change a directory manually you can enter it into the string
gadget.
- On the bottom you find five gadgets:
Connect : Opens a requester to enter data which will be used to
connect to a remote host.
Close : Close a already existing connection.
Setup : Open a Window that will allow you to change the default
settings.
About : Shows information about the author if this program.
Exit : Exits the program. If you're connected it will ask you
wheter to disconnect from the remote host or to stay.
The Connect-Requester :
-----------------------
When you click on 'Connect' the connect requester will open. There you
can enter the address of the host, the username, password and
eventually the account information (usually not needed).
There is also the possibility to enter a starting directory which will
be selected as soon as the connection is up.
For anonymous login you can simply click on 'anonymous' and mftp will
try to login as 'anonymous' and the email address (you hav to set it in
the setup) as password.
The top field is not needed unless you define Hosts in the setup and
save them (see below).
Click on 'OK' to try to get a connection to the given host. A status
information will appear and inform you about the progress.
The Setup-Requester:
--------------------
It is divided into three pages which can be selected with the gadget on
the top. On the first page you will find theese gadgets:
Email address : Enter your email address here. It will be used as
password when you login as anonymous.
Default transfer: Set which transfer type you want to use when you
start mftp the next time.
Treat link as.. : Select wheter you want links on the remote host to
be listed as files or directories.
Unfortunately there is no way to check this
automatically. If directory-links appear in the file
list or vice versa you can change this selection and
refresh the remote directory.
Show ftp output : If selected there appears a list in the main window
with all the responses we get from the remote host.
If you use NTSC 600x200 you might want to deselect
it so MUI won't switch to a smaller (unreadable)
font.
Confirm delete : If selected you must confirm everytime when you want
to delete something. Otherwise every 'delete' or
'rmdir' will delete IMMEDIATELY.
Log ftp messages: currently not supported.
Transfer Bell : Rings every time a transfer is complete.
Auto update : Always updates the listing when you change the
remote host (should usually be on). When deselected
You have to do a manual 'refresh' every time you
change a directory or connect to a host.
Directory caching: Enables directory caching. This way if you change
to a directory you have been before mftp doesn't
need to get the entire filelist from the remote
host. mftp uses a directory in 'T:' to save
every directory. (If you run out of memory you
might want to delete theese files (NOT the
directory) because mftp doesn't check if there is
still room.
If enabled it speeds up changing directories a lot!
Transfer Buffer : Lets you set the size in bytes of the transfer
buffer. It is used while receiving and sending
files. If you feel mftp accesses you disk too often
while transferring, just enlarge the buffer.
mftp will access the disk always when 'x' bytes are
received.
History lines : Set the amount of lines which will be displayed
in the history window (ftp output). If you're
short with memory I suggest not to use a value
higher than 50.
On the host page of the seupt requester you can predefine host which
will be later easily accessible in the connect requester (roll down
menu). Click 'new' to define a new host. The connect requester will
appear and lets you enter all the necessary data (see 'connect
requester). When you're finished, simply click 'OK'. Don't be afraid,
this way you won't get connected. The just made entry will appear in
the list. You can 'edit' it later again or move it 'up' and 'down'.
On the 'Auto recon' page you can predefine file-patterns which will be
used to determine wheter to use binary or ascii transfer mode. This has
only an effect when you selected 'auto' as transfer mode.
Standars Amiga wildcards are understood (as * #? ? and other).
Entering data is quite strightforward so I'll just give you an example
list :
binary patterns : ascii patterns :
*.lha *.txt
*.lzh *readme
*.zip *.doc
*.exe
and so on. You can check in the history window which mode has been
selected: e.g. 'Match in BINARY pattern list' will appear then mftp
will use binary mode.
On the bottom of the setup requester there are always three gadgets:
Save : Save the corrent settings to envarc:mftp.config and to
env:mftp.config.
It will also save all window positions and sizes. So mftp
will appear in the same look after the next reboot.
The current directory on the local (your) machine will also
be saved so the next time you start mftp you are back in your
donload directory or whatever.
Use : Only use theese settings temporarely. If you make a reset
mftp will use the last 'saved' settings.
Cancel: Abort any changes and reload the last 'used' settings.
It will also jump back to the last 'used' or 'saved'
directory.
If you have any problems using mftp feel free to email me.
Registration:
=============
Send a monney order, a 10$ bill or simmilar to:
Michael Neuweiler email: dolphin@zool.unizh.ch
Hauriweg 6
8038 Zurich
Switzerland
and you'll get a key file which makes the requester disappear.
I'll send it preferably by email ! If I shall send you a disk please
insert also an envelope with the right postage on it.
I know some might say.. "bah, why send him 10$ if mftp works anyway."
Well I, I spent a lot of time programing this piece. I even had to
completely rewrite it because there was a bug which made A4000 crash
and which was not found (now I know what it was... Cheers, Stefan ! :-)
If you have any suggestions what else could be included, please email
me !
To do:
======
I know a lot of you want this thing to be localized. I'll do it maybe
but now (august 1995) I've got to concentrate on biology again -
because thats what I should study (and not autodocs of Mui :-)
Known Bugs:
===========
The Abort sequence in the Connect-Status window doesn't work very well
yet. It still takes some time sometimes to abort.
When you transfer a file which is in fact a link to another file in
another directory (e.g. all files in aminet/recent) then mftp is
not able to get the correct filesize and it uses the size of the link
(e.g. 23 bytes) which has the effect that the transfer status
shows 100% during the whole transfer. This is not a BUG !
